There can be considerable heat loss/gain through an underfloor with bearer & joist construction. Particularly with exposed timber flooring, tiles or parquetry. By installing insulation under the floor you ensure the floor surface maintains the inside house temperature as against the extremes of the outside near ground climate.
For existing construction, our preferred work method sees us fit Fletcher Pink Floor batts between the joists and then face the entire underfloor area with a breather foil sarking to help support the batts plus eliminate underfloor draughts that might sneak through cracks in the flooring. It is important to use a breather foil to ensure an equilibrium in moisture levels particularly with polished timber floors. Care need to be taken around electrical wiring so as not to conceal the danger.
For new construction, that might see a certain amount of exposure to the elements such as Winter rains and Summer storms, we believe Foilboard installed on saddles between the floor joist prior to sheeting is the perfect solution. The foil-faced polystyrene is not compromised by moisture in the way that traditional bulk insulations are and the reflective foil surfaces offer improved thermal R ratings.
For Commercial Projects where Section J Compliance is required there are numerous products ranging from the more economical foil-faced blanket such as Permastop or Anticon which are the best option above suspended ceilings. For exposed finish situations it might be a Rigid Glasswool with a smoother foil facing or a dual reflective situation using Foilboard and even products like Kingspan Kooltherm or Fletcher’s Performatherm. This area gets very technical and the performance numbers are based on the System value of the Total Construction.
